February Meeting of the Triangle Area Green Party

preface: Prior to our meeting, elena, ed and myself went to an HKonJ organizing/palnning meeting at the Minority Institute Building on Parrish street in Durham. The purpose of that meeting was to see where we as Greens would fit into the event and what we might contribute. Part of our TG meeting was devoted to this. A followup/final details meeting will be held on St. Augustine's campus onn Thursday Feb 8th at 6:30 PM, at a location on campus yet to be determined.

Minutes:

Meeting was held at the Broad Street Cage on, of course, Broad Street in Durham. Since there weren't any readily available areas of the cafe where we could meet, we put folding chairs on the stage and met there.

Attending: Elena, Ed, Hart, Steve Milder, Theresa El-amin

Theresa El-amin most of you know, Steve is a graduate student in history at UNC, and was a Green up in Mass. before coming to NC. Please welcome both as new Trigreens members. Theresa can be reached at theresaelamin@aol.com. Steve is smilder@unc.edu.

Elena described our meeting structure for Theresa and Steve, and also a brief description of our recent past events. We also talked about the local organizations in which we were active (GRIM - Wayne, MAPAC/Divestment movement - Manzoor, Friends of Dix - Jerry, CASE - Ed). Theresa is active in several groups, notably the Southern Anti-rascism Network. Theresa, if would you post your other affiliations to the listserv, we would like to see them.

Elena brought up the need for new co-chairs and officer elections. Wayne and Manzoor have expressed interest in the co-chair positions. Elena proposes to act as secretatry in the upcomomg year. Hart volunteered to continure as treasurer.

It was agreed that we would finish the election on-line. It is proposed that we have one week for people to nominate themselves or others for any position, and an additional week to compile the vote. This is the week to nominate (Feb 5 - Feb 11, seven calendar days) and the following seven calendar days (Feb 12-Feb 19) will be for voting. We should have new officers in place Feb 20th. One position which we have had in the past was the communicator position, which was filled by Amy.We currently have no nominee for that position in this election cycle.

We had some discussion, sparked by Theresa's question about membership requirements, about a new proposal from Hart for membership requirements. This proposal, which would require a change in our by-laws, is based on the proposal floated at the spring gathering to have membership in the local require membership in the state party. Hart will formulate this proposal and post it to the listserv for discussion.

Theresa described the upcomomg HKonJ event, which will take place on Saturday, feb 10th in Raleigh. The event description, program, and march route, can be found here. Trigreens will meet at ACRe on Saturday at 10 AM to get our stuff together (flags, banners, etc) and leave from there for the march. Wayne is investigating the possibility of borrowing a bio-diesel bus from SURGE to ferry people to the event. This event aims to turn out 50-100 people from every county. Ttrigreens proposes to contribute money to the HKonJ march (to help defray bus expenses to get people to the march from remote areas), from the funds we got from the campus greens defunct chapter at NCSU. This amount will be between $50 and $100. So far we are leaning toward $100.

Wayne will distribute flyers for this event in Chatham. Ed will spam the progressive listservs in Chatham. Wayne vvolunteered Susan to post flyers in Chapel Hill, with the possibility that SDS might do this also.

Theresa spoke about an upcomimg ProP (Pressure on Price), in Chapel Hill at the public library on Feb 11. ProP is lobbying Price to support HR 508, which is a resolution calling for immediate withdrawal from Iraq. Price and other Dems are resisting this, and introducing competing resolutions which have softer language. Trigreens will try to send a rep to this meeting to report back to the group. Wayne will go if the meeting is not too late in the day, as he has a conflict. Elena is going to contact Tamara _______(?) about the meeting time. My notes also show a reference to a Feb 16th organzing meeting, but somebody needs to refresh my memory on what this was about.

We talked about the upcoming Fayetteville anti-war rally, now in its fourth year, and some changes surrounding the event. We are agreed that we will attend this event, but there is another DC march around that time which Elena is going to attend. Wayne and Ed at least will go to Fayetteville, and table there. Grey Newman is on the planning committee, so he will be there as well.

A dscussion at the end of the meeting led to the position resolution about progressive events which Wayne has posted to the listserv.

That's all, folks

Wayne
